Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by her mother, grandmother, as well as her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. She suffered from an anxiety disorder that was rooted in words as a young toddler. Ford's passion for acting started when she was young. She was a part of in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just a few weeks, she realized this school wasn't for her. Ford applied instead at the Central School of Speech and Drama and finally won the position she wanted on her third attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of Ford's classmates. Ford's debut on TV was an episode in 1991 called Surgical Spirit. By the moment she was done with school, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties through shows like The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. Tate also regularly worked in the theatre, and later joined the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedies that were added to her selection in the year 1996.
